Michael Jackson Tribute Biography By Gary Vine
Michael Jackson was unquestionably the biggest pop star of the ’80s, and certainly one of the most popular recording artists of all time. In his prime, Jackson was an unstoppable juggernaut, possessed of all the tools to dominate the charts seemingly at will: an instantly identifiable voice, eye-popping dance moves, stunning musical versatility, and loads of sheer star power.
His 1982 blockbuster Thriller became the biggest-selling album of all time (probably his best-known accomplishment), and he was the first black artist to find stardom on MTV, breaking down innumerable boundaries both for his race and for music video as an art form. Yet as Jackson’s career began, very gradually, to descend from the dizzying heights of his peak years, most of the media’s attention focused on his increasingly bizarre eccentricities; he was often depicted as an arrested man-child, completely sheltered from adult reality by a life spent in show business.
The snickering turned to scandal in 1993, when Jackson was accused of molesting a 13-year-old boy; although he categorically denied the charges, his out-of-court settlement failed to restore his tarnished image. He never quite escaped the stigma of those allegations, and while he continued to sell records at superstar-like levels, he didn’t release them with enough frequency (or, many critics thought, inspiration) to once again become better known for his music than his private life. Whether as a pop icon or a tabloid caricature, Jackson always remained bigger than life.
Here we provide a run down of the key dates that Michael Jackson has accomplished during his life.
1958 – Michael Joseph Jackson is born August 29, in Gary, Indiana, USA.
1962 – Joe, Michael’s father, organises a family musical group – it eventually becomes the Jackson 5
1970 – The Jackson 5 release ‘I Want You Back’, ‘ABC’, ‘The Love You Save’ and ‘I’ll Be There’ – they all top the charts
1972 – Michael Jackson scores his first number 1 single as a solo artist with ‘Ben’ – he also earns an Oscar nomination
1977 – Jackson stars in the movie ‘The Wiz’ with Diana Ross and meets Quincy Jones
1979 – Jackson releases his first solo album as an adult. ‘Off The Wall’, produced by Quincy Jones goes platinum, while singles ‘Don’t Stop ’til You Get Enough’ and ‘Rock With You’ top the charts.
1982 – Jackson releases ‘Thriller’, the album goes on to become the biggest-selling album of all time, staying in the charts for 2 years and hitting number one worldwide. ‘The Girl Is Mine’ – a duet with Paul McCartney, ‘Beat It’, ‘Billie Jean’, ‘Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’, ‘Human Nature’ and ‘P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)’ all reach number one in the charts. Michael Jackson supports the singles with amazing music videos, turning them into mini movies with narratives, best shown on ‘Thriller’, widely acknowledged as the greatest video of all time.

Save Money on Music in a Tough Economy
For many of us Saturday afternoons used to mean heading into town to browse around the shops and flick through the CD racks looking for some new music to invest in. However, now we can avoid the traffic and crowds and simply download music from the internet, whatever type of genre you prefer, classic rock, indie, alternative, gospel music or country music, you are guaranteed to find something to suit your taste.
If you are bored with listening to the same old songs constantly, then it is time to find something new and fresh. Some music websites charge a small fee for each song you want to download, whilst others offer them free. Just type in the genre, name of the band or particular song you are looking for and find it in an instant.
Downloading your preferred kind of music straight onto your iPod or mp3 player means you can carry it around with you wherever you go, listen to your favorite songs on the way to work, at the gym, whilst out jogging or shopping at the store. The great thing about mp3 players is that you can change the music over and over again, listen to music on your headphones, play it through the computer, or plug them into speakers and allow everyone to enjoy the music.
Buying a CD can be costly, especially if the album is a new release. You might get your CD home and then realize you only actually like a few of the songs on it, it makes a lot more sense to just download the songs you like and will listen to. Even if you have to pay a small charge for each song it is definitely a lot cheaper than buying CD’s.
Lots of artists these days give away previews of their latest album or song via the internet and it is quite simple to download these. Downloading music also has the added advantage that it doesn’t take up much space at all. When you consider how much space all those songs would take up in your house, the time it would take to dust stacks and stacks of CD’s and keep them in order, then it is going to add up to a lot of room and effort. Then total up the amount you spent on them and you are likely to be in for a big shock! Save your money and space, to download free music from the internet is a much more sensible option.
There are websites where it is possible to download free music, they are very easy to use and you can listen to the top artists or the latest songs before you download. With a digital music library of over 50,000 songs you are guaranteed to find something in your favourite genre. Just browse through the music categories, select the songs you want to download and click the button.
These sites are legal; royalties are paid to the artists so no-one loses out. Once you have downloaded the music it is yours to do with whatever you wish. You can share it with other people or delete it, the choice is yours, and it is all free. The preferred format to download music is mp3 as songs can be downloaded in minutes, they are good quality, and you can store a large amount of music on CD-R’s and load mp3 music files into iPods, MP3 players, or any other portable players.
Whether you like ballroom, dance, hip hop, jazz, country music or free karaoke then get downloading and listen to mp3 songs for free. There is no peer to peer sharing and it is all totally legal. Types of Saxophones: Which Saxophone is Right For Me
If one is looking at purchasing a used saxophone, two presumptions or considerations may arise: first, that the person purchasing must get the item which will give him the best value for his money; second, that the person is using it for playing music. The importance of the second point is that saxophone, as a musical instrument, comes in different kinds. The difference lies in the music and pitch being produced by each type of instrument, sizes and shapes, as well as considerations which are related to the skill level of the player of the instrument.
Therefore, to be able to make the best decision as to which saxophone best suits any player of the instrument, it is important that one has a working knowledge of the different types of saxophones as well as the corresponding differences that distinguish one from the other. In doing this, one can effectively discriminate and choose the saxophone that best suits him.
There are generally four types of saxophones available in the market today. The first type is called the soprano saxophone. The soprano saxophone is tuned in the key of B flat (or Bb). It has the highest tune or pitch among all the other types of saxophones. Consequently, playing the instrument requires some skill because the pitch, being high, is more difficult to manipulate and manage. Therefore, most of the players of this type of saxophone are already adept at playing the instrument and are what can properly be considered as professional saxophonists.
The second type is the Alto Saxophone which plays at the key of E flat (or Eb). The position of this type of saxophone’s bell allows its player to hear more of the sound produced by the instrument than by the other saxophones played. Most pieces composed for practice are also tuned in the key of Alto Saxophone. Consequently, it is considered as most befitting beginners and anyone whose skill level in saxophone is elementary.
The third type would be the tenor saxophone. It is larger than the alto saxophone and the sound its produces is closer in range to the human voice. This is also the best type of instrument for playing jazz and some rock.
The fourth type of saxophone is the baritone saxophone. It has the lowest range among the other types of saxophone and is usually used in the bass section in soul music or tunes. It is also the biggest and heaviest among all the other types of saxophone.
All of these types of saxophones are best in their own respect. One just needs to identify precisely the use of the saxophone to be played or purchased. So if one is a beginner, it is strongly suggested that he starts playing the alto saxophone first. It also depends upon the sound that the player is most interested in. If one prefers to play jazz tunes, then the tenor saxophone is recommended. But if one is more into bass range sound, richer and deeper tone then the baritone is the best choice.
One may also take into account the size and the weight of the saxophone which will affect its manageability and overall comfort in playing the instrument. There are, of course, no hard fast rules applicable in determining the best type of saxophone. The person has to weigh in different factors in the process of trying top get the saxophone which is just right for him.

Interview with Jay C By Gary Vine
<!–[endif]–>
Jay C is a Torquay based rapper and freestyler who has just launched his debut album produced by Relegate Records. Jay had a few minutes to spare out of his hectic and non stop schedule to answer a few questions by Gary Vine which provides a great insight into his aspirations into being a successful and well noticed rapper.
You’ve been rapping since 15 years old? How did if all start?
I started off just freestyling with a friend shortly after moving back to Ipswich from Devon. I had wrote the odd set of lyrics here and there but i didn’t take it too serious. I went to a house party with my brother where he introduced me to a rapper/producer called Mr Woods who was part of a group called Battle Scars, after about a month I got the opportunity to feature on a few of their tracks and the experience made me start to take witting lyrics a lot more seriously.
What made you decide “Rap” was your type of music?
I went through stages of liking different types of music more than others particularly Indie and Rap. When I was 14 I started taking guitar lessons for about a year but I struggled to get into it. To this day I still listen to some Indie music but as I grew older I started to listento more and more rap, hip hop and R’n’B. So I started to write the odd lyric here and there and the more I started to write it soon became clear that writing lyrics and rap music was the thing I wanted to do.
What’s it like working with Relegate Records?
Demanding (laughing out loud) , but I believe in the work we are trying to achieve. You no the old saying “the more you put in the more you get out” and the progression the label has made within the past year is evident where ever we go in the bay.
Your debut album “Letting Them Know” was release on 24th November 2008. Have you achieved your goals through the launch of your debut album?
My expectations weren’t too high as it’s my first album and the current state of the economy is making it harder for Independent record labels to push their projects forward but I believe that no matter how well you do, you can always do better by pushing yourself that extra mile. We still have plans in action to promote the album but as you may know no one makes it big from their first ever album.
Please provide some more information on how you put the album together?
We weren’t 100% aware at the time we were making an album it just kind of fell together after about 8/9 months of solid recording. After Relegate Records became official we realised that we had to start making some money so we picked the best 10 tracks we had done and went from their.
What is your favourite song on this album?
Mummy’s boy by far! I got a few other’s I really like but Mummy’s boy the realist track I’ve done.
Does any of your music have any reflection on your life?
Apart from Mummy’s boy and playa 4 life (Jay laughs out loud!) no not really, but this is something I have been working on in new material some of which will be released quite soon, so keep an eye on relegaterecords.co.uk for the new singles.
Have you any gigs coming up soon?
Yeah, I have a gig coming up at liquid bar in Paignton on 30th April. I had a gig there in November last year and the night was such a success that the Manager asked the label if I could come back again. I’ve also got a few more gig’s coming up soon but they are yet to be confirmed, I’ll keep everyone informed through the website so keep an eye out.
Do you enjoy the audience atmosphere?
Of course, what true artiste doesn’t like the buzz of a crowd watching you on stage, I’m still growing as an artist so it’s a nice feeling when I see the crowd respond to one of my tunes.
What’s your favourite type of audience? (i.e. pub, club, mini arena, etc)
I’ll get back to you on that one when I’ve performed in a mini arena (Jay laughs)…. so I’d have to say in a club. I do like the atmosphere club crowds bring to the gig but playing in a mini arena is on a different level, I’d love to have the opportunity but we’ll have to see what the future holds.
Every artist whether signed or unsigned have had unexpected encounters on the stage. Can you recall an unexpected encounter on stage that wasn’t suppose to happen?
Yeah, their was a incident at a festival I was performing at last year, where as we were in the middle of the chorus on our main track the needle on the turntable skipped ahead a little and confused the crowd and myself but luckily it didn’t skip to far so I was able to salvage the performance, Touch wood their will be no more in the near future.
Have you got any future album or single releases coming soon?
Like I said earlier I have a few singles coming out in the next month or so and there’s plan’s to bring out another CD around April/May time. I wont be looking to release another album for about a year or so but there will be plenty of fresh new material to look forward to.
Would you like to be profiled as a world class musician?
Who wouldn’t? If I was considered a worldclass musician I’d be grateful that my talent has been recognised to that extent and that my voice has been heard all around the world.
Have you ever considered auditioning for reality programs for shows like X Factor?
I can appreciate the talent of some of the contestants, some of them have amazing voices and without shows like X factor they might never have been heard and given the to shine. But until Simon Cowell comes up with a rap factor I don’t think you’ll be seeing Jay C on an episode of X factor any time soon.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years from now?
I would like to have made considerable amount of progress with my music and hopefully have a good reputation throughout the UK as an established artist. I would like to have performed at some big festivals like Glastonbury, maybe to have collaborated with a big artist or producer and have a single in the charts. And ideally not living with my mum and step dad……
The debut album from Jay C is available to download from Relegate Records at www.relegaterecords.co.uk. The album titled “Letting Them Know” which is a landmark in Jay C’s rap career and is the cornerstone of the DSW (dirty southwest) movement which is taking the southwest by storm.

The Benefits of the Digital Piano
A digital piano is a modernized version of the electronic piano that was manufactured and sold from the 1950′s through the 1980′s. Electronic pianos were based upon synthesized sound as opposed to the mechanical sounds carried by the electric pianos which were sold for awhile in the 1960′s and 70′s.
When the digital piano appeared on the scene in the 1980′s, they began to take the place of the acoustic piano because they were less expensive than acoustic pianos. Comparing a digital piano and an acoustic piano of the same size, the digital piano generally costs much less. Today, the cost savings also continue to add up because the digital piano has no strings; this, in turn, means that it does not have to be tuned. Since the cost of tuning an acoustic piano can run between $75.00 to 175.00 each time the piano is tuned, usually at least once a year, obtaining a digital piano as opposed to an acoustic piano may also be desirable because of the savings in its continued upkeep.
The digital pianos were and are also a bit smaller than their acoustic counterparts making them easy to put into tight places. The feel of the key on the modern digital pianos compares favorably with the acoustic piano, as well. For a pianist, the touch of the keyboard is very important in how that musician plays the instrument. The digital pianos available now are able to simulate the weight of the keys on the acoustic keyboard making them an attractive alternative to the serious musician.
There are other features which make digital pianos very attractive to keyboardists as well. The ability to transpose is available at the touch of a button. For those who sing solos or who sing with other groups, that ability is a very attractive feature, especially when a lot of music is written for sopranos and the person who wants to sing a solo may be an alto or a bass.
Many of the newest digital pianos have the ability to link to a computer or they have a place for a disk on which the keyboardist can record the music for later use. With the advent of digital music players such as Ipods, Zunes, mp3′s, and other equipment, this can be seen as very advantageous for the person who wants to record his or her own playing so that it can be used later at a different venue.
The most important feature is the timbre of the instrument. Timbre has to do with the quality of sound that comes from an instrument. New digital pianos do not have the “tinny” sound that came with early electric and electronic pianos. The timbre of the instruments synthesized into the piano gives a beautiful tone that can even sometimes be deepened or lightened according to the whims of the keyboardist. This is very easily done at the touch of a control wheel or slider on the digital piano.
While most concert halls still used highly crafted acoustic grand pianos, the advent of the digital piano is a great help to people who desire to have pianos in their homes so that their children can learn to play the piano. Since learning to play the piano on an old upright piano of indiscriminate age, having a digital piano has been a delight. It provides for creativity and enjoyment in my home for the listener and the keyboardist. Having access to a piano in the home is one of the greatest joys of my life. I wish that joy for children and adults everywhere.

History of Rock Keeps Rolling On
Ever since Little Richard, Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry began crooning tunes with a different sound, the history of rock music has been marching forward. Different than anything that had come before it, rock mixed racy lyrics with loud, but soulful music to create something so distinct it earned its own moniker.
As the history of this musical form continues to be written, remember the basic genre is classified by the use of the guitar. Whether it’s hard rock, country rock, classic rock, punk rock or beyond, rock and roll involves guitars and lots of them. Acoustic or electric doesn’t necessarily matter, but a lead role in the music does (with a few exceptions).
Rock and roll history is often said to have gotten its first page in the 1950s when “Rocket 88″ was released. Little Richard, Elvis, Ray Charles and Chuck Berry all wrote their own pages during this decade. With songs such as “Rock Around The Clock,” “Love Me Tender,” “School Day” and more hitting the charts, the road was paved for such artists as Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis to make their debuts on the scene.
The dancing rock of the 50s gave way to the more “radical” rock of the ’60s. Here a generation of youth found their voice in war protest songs and peace rally music. Elvis remained a mainstay during this decade, but other big names also made the scene. The likes of Bob Dylan, the Beach Boys, Frank Zappa and The Monkees were popular during the ’60s. The Beatles revolutionized rock music when they made their American invasion in 1964.
The 1970s saw a continuation of the themes of the ’60s with the addition of disco and other influences. Van Halen became a big name during this decade and legends Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison all met their ends during the 1970s. Greats from the ’50s and ’60s continued to rock during this decade as well.
The 1980s are perhaps best known for their heavy metal hair bands. Contrary to popular belief, this music was and remains more than just “noise.” Many musicians of this era were classically trained and know their stuff. Big moments during this decade include the death of John Lennon, the end of the band Wings, the creation of “We Are The World,” and Michael Jackson’s massive hit record “Thriller.” The more soulful sounds of Billy Joel were also a mainstay during this decade. Bands such as Journey, Def Leppard and the Scorpions made it big during this era in rock.
The 1990s saw the creation of boy bands and some serious recognition for rockers when the Hall of Fame opened in Cleveland. Musicians to hit the charts with a bang during this decade included Madonna, Kurt Cobain, Boyz II Men, Alanis Morissette and more. Heavy metal continued, but other sounds made their ways onto the airwaves as well.
With hard rock, classic, punk, pop and more still major players in the music scene, this genre is showing no signs of going away. It’s plain to see rock and roll “will never die.”

Ukulele Tab: Learn To Play Tom Dooley On Your Ukulele
Maybe you play mostly chords on you ukulele? Do you know that you can play melodies with the help of ukulele tab? Let’s play Tom Dooley!
Here you have the lyrics to the first verse:
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Hang down your head and cry
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Poor boy you’re bound to die
You don’t have to know sheet music notation to play. Instead we will use a form of tablature.
Tablature is a special form of musical notation that will show you how to place your fingers in order to play a melody on your ukulele. This notation is also called ukulele tab.
On your ukulele you have four strings. The one with the highest pitch is called the first string and is usually tuned to an A.
When you play on your ukulele you will have the first strings nearest your feet.
Before you start to play Tom Dooley let’s take a look at the ukulele tab notation. What does the following tab mean?
01
In this type of ukulele tab this means that you play the first open string. An open string is a string you play without pressing down a left hand finger. One more example:
32
The numbers indicate that you shall press down the third fret on the second string.
Now it’s time to play the first part of Tom Dooley. Here is the lyrics and corresponding ukulele tab:
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
03 03 03 23 12 01 01
Remember, the first digit tells you which fret to press down and the second which string. Here comes the next ukulele tab:
Hang down your head and cry
03 03 03 23 12 32
This type of ukulele tab doesn’t tell you the length of the notes but you will probably find that out by yourself as you already know the melody.
Let’s move on!
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
03 03 03 23 12 32 32
You can use your right hand thumb to play the notes. What about your left hand?
Of course you can play all notes with your left hand index finger. However in the long run you will probably find it easier to play melodies with more of your left hand fingers.
I suggest that you use your left hand index finger to press down the notes on the first fret, your middle finger for the second fret and your ring finger for the notes on the third fret.
Let’s continue with the last ukulele tab:
Poor boy you’re bound to die
32 32 01 12 23 12
This ukulele tab will also work on a guitar as the first three strings are tuned in the same way on a guitar.
Try to memorize the melody by practicing the ukulele tab one line at a time!
Well, now you can play Tom Dooley on your ukulele so now it’s time to play for your friends!
If you have a friend who owns another ukulele and can play chords you can play the melody together with the following two chords:
F major: 24 03 12 01
C7: 04 03 02 11
Start with F until you come to the word cry. When you sing cry change to the chord C7 and play it until you come to the word die where you change back to F again.
It is always nicer to play with friends, isn’t it!
