Christina Aguilera, Going Totally “GaGa” With New Look

Perhaps it’s the fact that “Dirrty” singer recently had a child and is so out of the loop that she’s missed the newest Lady GaGa’s video/style, but I’m pretty sure pop icon Christina Aguilera has people to check that kind of thing, right? The poptress, who has sold over 42 million records worldwide since she first premiered with her oh-so-innocent “Genie in the Bottle” single, has denied seeing a connection between the electro-pop newcomer Lady GaGa and her new retro bangs and boots.

Talking with MTV the pop singer mentions almost every contemporary artist, except GaGa. “I wanted to give [fans] a little sneak preview of what’s to come. The vein of the new material [from her new album Keeps Getting Better] is a futurist take on what is inspiring me at the moment?and it’s got a very pop-art feel, visually. [There's a] throwback to Andy Warhol and all the colors and vividness and bright boldness that was in that artwork. I’m a big collector of pop art and graffiti art at this point, too ? D* Face and Banksy, also Roy Lichtenstein?and it’s been very fun venturing off into that zone.” Don’t musical artists incorporate all that “vividness” just as much as some painters do? I think so, Ms. Aguilera, who along with her new look is beginning to promote her new album. Her influences have sparked more contemporary musical artists, aka Lady GaGa, so much so that the exceedingly tacky pleather outfits and raccoon eye makeup almost seem to be hashed/designed by the same art director. The “connections” were initially fraught with utter unawareness, as interviews with the star indicated that when asked about the similarities between the two artists, Aguilera said “I’m not quite sure who this person is, to be honest.”

While the army brat was initially compared to other ’90s pop icon Britney Spears as the two debuted their sound around the same time and had grown up together on Disney’s Mickey Mouse Club, Aguilera easily separated herself once she grabbed onto a sultry side of her voice and style, spawning everything from dreadlocks to heavy bronzer and rap. It was almost a change of pace to see the Pittsburg native donning sassy curls and pleated skirts after the birth of her child Max with husband Jordan Bratman, but once again Aguilera’s pop rebellion hasn’t stunted as a return to pleather and knee high stripper-esque boots has made a return in her wardrobe.

Keeps Getting Better is not only a preview of the future; it’s a look at the decade that has allowed this pop star to showcase her work. “It was tough looking back ? it was surprising,” she told MTV News. “It was really gratifying to see how much hard work I’ve put in over the last ten years. When you’re in it, you just don’t realize as it accumulates how much you’ve done and how far you’ve come. I can’t believe it’s been a decade already.” The album, which includes a few remixed version of some original work (“Genie in a Bottle” and “Beautiful”) also shows fans what’s in store for them come the next Aguilera album ? “Keeps Gettin’ Better” is a furiously futuristic hit that easily adjusts to the stars new rocks inspirations like Blondie and Velvet Underground.

Christina Aguilera – The Ever-Changing Pop Artist Turns to Electro

Since appearing on MTV as a teen-friendly pop singer in her video for “Genie in a Bottle,” Christina Aguilera has gone through a lot of changes. She’s gone from innocent to trampy, dabbled with a classic glamour queen look, and, with a new record due out in 2009, surely will come up with a surprising role to take on for that. But what’s surprising many of her fans is the recent revelation that Aguilera is experimenting with electronica. According to Billboard, she’s looking to work with artists as diverse as Sia, Goldfrapp and Ladytron-all colorful chanteuses from the world of electronic indie-pop. Aguilera apparently is a big fan of each, and will feature them on her new album.

This is a pretty notable change in musical direction for her. Aguilera rose to fame in the late ’90s, fast on the heels of Britney Spears but proving, in the long run, to be far more mentally stable. Her professional career began in her teens when she appeared on Star Search and, later on, The Mickey Mouse Club. The Disney Channel show was also a spawning ground for other musical pop acts, including Spears and two of *NSYNC’s members. After recording a song for the Disney film Mulan, Aguilera inked a recording contract and put out her first record. The debut’s hit single, “Genie in a Bottle,” was a number one for numerous weeks. “What a Girl Wants,” another smash single, made her even an even bigger star.

Because of her Ecuadorian heritage (on her father’s side), she was lumped into the “Latin” pop movement of the late ’90s along with acts like Ricky Martin, Shakira and Enrique Iglesias. Listeners would have never guessed that she didn’t actually speak Spanish. She did record a Spanish-language record, Mi Reflejo.

In 2002, something seemed to shift in the young pop star’s world. She did a nude photo-spread for Rolling Stone, and her public image became one saturated with sex. She released Stripped that year as well, with the single “Dirrty” emphasizing the hyper-sexual message she was broadcasting. This was not the same artist who at one time appeared to be a more family-friendly version of Britney Spears. It probably alienated quite a few former fans, but it also attracted others. Regardless, the record was widely panned.

Aguilera did another about-face in 2006, turning from the image she’d created for Stripped to a Marilyn Monroe lookalike on the aptly titled Back to Basics. She seemed to have rediscovered herself after exploring hypersexual territory. Her music was respectable adult contemporary pop, and highlighted her voice. It proved a successful recipe, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 and becoming a huge seller.

With her new album due out in 2009, no one is entirely sure what Aguilera will surprise the public with. Surely everyone holding Christina Aguilera tickets will enjoy her always entertaining live shows, but the music itself will probably be a departure. Christina Aguilera – Pop Star Keeps Gettin’ Better

More than a decade after pop songstress Christina Aguilera emerged on scene wearing a genie outfit, batting her eyelashes while tempting, “Come on and let me out,” the incredible performer is now releasing a decade full of hits entitled Keeps Gettin’ Better, available this fall exclusively at Target stores and at Target.

She was one of the Mickey Mouse Club’s most prominent members to go solo in the late ’90s (alongside Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez and Britney Spears,) and Christina Aguilera is still going strong 15 years later, long after some of her mice counterparts have faded into the background of pop music. It seems as if Christina Aguilera is right on target – literally. Pop music’s finest has gone from a “genie in a bottle” to “dirrty,” “beautiful” and “stripped,” and now Aguilera is out to please her most genuine fans by releasing all of those phases on a greatest hits compilation, Keeps Gettin’ Better – A Decade of Hits. The only twist? This album will be available exclusively at Target stores and online.

In order to recollect the past decade of Aguilera’s success, the pop star has included 10 of her most popular hits on the album including “Come on Over,” “What a Girl Wants” and “Lady Marmalade,” along with two new singles and two more re-recordings of Christina Aguilera classics “Genie in a Bottle” and “Beautiful.” Aguilera’s choice to solely release her music to Target puts her among the ranks of other popular artists such as Alicia Keys, Carrie Underwood, the Jonas Brothers and John Legend, who have all started the trend of releasing music exclusively to the everything store with the red-and-white bulls eye.

It’s hard to believe it’s been more than a decade since Christina Aguilera started recording hit pop songs, but it all began with the blonde vixen’s teen pop classic “Genie in a Bottle” in 1999. The Staten Island, New York native got her quick start leading up in the music industry with her stint on the Disney Channel’s The New Mickey Mouse Club in 1992, and after recording the hit song “Reflection” for the Disney classic Mulan Aguilera landed a record deal with RCA, quickly followed by the dance-pop hit “Genie in a Bottle.” After her breakout single reached number one on the charts, the vocalist’s follow-up song “What a Girl Wants” also reached the coveted number one slot on the charts, as did her next single, 2000s “Come on Over Baby (All I Want Is You).”

The 2000s were full of musical success for the racy Aguilera, whose reputation went through the slammer when her risque album Stripped forced the image of a much too young singer jaded by the business. Nevertheless, Aguilera continued to accumulate massive success, harnessing her sex kitten image while not letting it get out of control. Since the early 2000s, Aguilera has added four Grammy Awards and countless other number ones to her repertoire, continuing to impress fans with smash releases and live performances. Anyone who’s had a pair of Christina Aguilera tickets over the years knows the energetic power the enchantress has over her audiences, and a string of live performances just solidify Aguilera’s place in pop music’s hall of fame.
