Absolute Magic of Classical Music

“Music speaks what cannot be expressed, soothes the mind and gives it rest, heals the heart and makes it whole, flows from heaven to the soul.” Truly you get mesmerized reading this beautiful quote. Out of the zillion classes and genres of music, classical music is peerless, eternally enthralling and ultimately spell bind. To aficionado of it, the genre requires no aid in applauding and exalting its chastity. Recently some researchers have affirmed some of the really bewitching and astounding benefits of this form of music. This study suggests that it showers a hankering for impeding crime. Amazingly, some police units of the United States and the UK are fighting crime with the help of divine classical music. Surprisingly applying the same method a considerable 33 Percent abate in robberies is carried out. In the year 2004 United Kingdom, of Classical Music Concerts in London was utilized by the British Transport Police to be played in London Underground stations. Animation of a new piece called “Exuberance” for string orchestra composed by Janet Dunbar: the entire video, audio and composition were created on computer. The computer graphics animation for this video was generated using the standard iTunes visualizer playing the music I wrote and realized using a host of music software. The music is for sale at itunes store: itunes.apple.com. The Exuberance video was uploaded just a few days before the announcement that Steve Jobs had passed away. It has thus become my tribute to Mr. Jobs and to all the folks who made the iTunes visualizer(s) a reality. Back in my CCRMA algorithmic music programming days, I was privileged to use the NeXTSTEP operating system. (Jobs had been thrown out of the company he had helped to create and so NeXT Computer was born). The NextSTEP operating system was the precursor to MacOSX, having a similar user interface and running on top of BSD Unix kernel. At CCRMA NeXTSTEP OS initially ran on the NeXT black hardware. When that hardware inevitably died, NeXTSTEP ran on PCs provided by HP. Music, more than entertainment, has played an instrumental role in healing and harmonizing the mind, body and spirit. For thousands of years, the Vedic culture has used sound and music for body and mind balancing, health enhancement, healing promotion and encouragement of heightened awareness.

The Greek mathematician, Pythagoras theorized that music diminished and even eradicated negative energy and emotions. Modern studies explicitly show that specific sounds and music do in fact, have documented, measurable and multiple healing benefits. Today’s medicine understands that all bodily functions, like breathing and pulse, work cyclically and rhythmically. It is these rhythms that are influenced and synchronized with certain music and sound patterns.

Music therapy, my favorite being classical, has become widly recognized since the early 1950s. Used for pain, migraines, cancer, stress, upset stomach, fatigue, depression and other, multiple disorders; music therapy can reduce heart rate, blood pressure, breathing rate, stress and anxiety. Most recently, music has been found to bolster the immune system and assists in harmonizing the symmetries in right and left frontal lobes of the brain, (in the case of mental disorders).

The most interesting of studies in music therapy is that of an experiment conducted years ago. The music experiment compared the effects of classical music to rock and roll music on plant growth. Intriguingly, the classical music helped the plants to grow faster; whereas the rock music actually deteriorated the plant’s growth. Similarly, classical music has the same effect on humans as it does on plants. Amazingly, patients who listened to Mozart had a whopping 10-15 point increase in IQ. Given this information, it might encourage one to go out and buy the latest Beethoven on compact disc.

Today, one doesn’t have to attend an orchestrated concert to hear it. Most outlet stores, even Internet stores sell classical music to the general public. I realize that many persons listen to fad music, pop, country or rock, but I used to be one of those people; before I dove into classical music firsthand.

The most profound effects of classical music, that I have personally discovered, is the phenomenal reduction of heart rate and respiratory rate it induces. When listening to classical music, I am “lifted” in spirit, mind and body. Like a feather takes to the sky, I feel freer, more relaxed and in tune with my higher self. Perhaps, if you get a chance, take a fifteen minute break from life. Pick up Mozart, Beethoven or some other classical music CD, pop it in your stereo, close your eyes and let the music set you free! Classical Music is not as popular today as it used to be. It has been around for hundreds of years and it is the oldest type of music out there. Classical music can also reduce stress and blood pressure. It is compiled of high-frequency sounds and it is said by some studies that these sounds re-energize the cortex of the brain and it stimulates health. Most popular music today operate on low-frequency sounds. These low-frequencies give you the opposite effect and make you feel down. Classical music is also extremely beneficial for pregnant women. Studies have shown that playing classical music for your unborn child has great benefits to him or her. While a child is in the womb, they hear a variety of sounds with many different rhythms. When outside of the womb, there have been reports of people who have remembered hearing that music, but they do not just hear it. It is said that they are able to understand the music as well.

No matter what type of music you listen to now on any FM radio stations, whether it is pop, rock or rap, chances of that music staying the same and being around for the next couple hundred years are very slim. That music is always changing; but at that time, you will still be able to hear the beautiful sounds of an orchestra or a single instrument playing new or timeless classics.

At the time of their composing, they were standing on the bow of the ship of music as it headed for the deep, dark, mysterious waters of the unknown possibilities of human experience. For them, their creative act was an experiment in both expression and technique.

Their creative acts were a tempest of exaggerations and struggles as they attempted to forge a new path to aesthetic experience. Many people have the same complaints about classical music and poetry. Some say classical music bores them and poetry just does not make any sense. In reality, they suffer a problem very similar to culture shock, or in other words, they have not learned how to appreciate poetry or classical music. I should be clear that most people fall into this category. Even people who have studied the arts often times do not put forth the energy required to appreciate some classical music or poetry. A look at how people listen and appreciate might help to understand what a listener or reader really has to do if they want to avoid being bored to tears by T. S. Eliot’s “Ash Wednesday” or Pier Gynt’s Hall of the Mountain King.

How to Listen

Spoiled by popular music, most people have never been taught how to listen to classical music. Popular music tends to consist of about three chords, has a repetitive ‘hook’, and nearly always consists of a four-four beat, three verses, and a chorus, except when it’s even simpler than that. Most popular music will repeat the important bits multiple times with a catchy rhythm just in case you didn’t hear it the first time, so you can learn the words to a song without ever really listening to it. In fact, anyone who happened to sit down and do nothing but listen intently to all the chord progressions, the lyrics, and the subtleties of the popular genre will most likely get really bored, really fast. Classical music is governed by some known conventions that have its roots in a variety of forms, genres, styles and historical periods. These features together go in defining the term ‘classical music.’ Music rated as classical has always made its thumping presence felt. With the evolution of the popular music forms, the dominance of the classical form has not diminished. In-fact, it further magnified with new forms and codes.

There are several factors that define Classical Music. These can be classified under the following heads:-

Instrumentation – This is one way of classifying the classical genre of music. Different instruments are brought to use for creating the symphony that make it classical. Various string instruments like violin, string, woodwind instruments, brass instruments and other diverse percussion are commonly used to give this form of music a unique style. However, nowadays electronic instruments like electric guitars are occasionally brought to use.

Form and Technical Execution – The classical form generally take the form of a song, symphony, dance music, chamber suite, symphony, concerto, electronic music and more. The composition of this form of music requires expertise as a lot of complexities are involved in arriving at a balance between its emotional content and the music that accompanies it. Complexity – The complexities involved in making of classical works are not just confined to instruments and beats. But a lot of it lies in the development, modulation, musical phrases and even length and variations of tones. A perfect combination of all these features results in the development of a perfect symphony of music. In-fact, the large scale classical works are built from smaller units of musical compositions.

Society – The classical forms of music maintains a repute of being a choice of the upper-level society. The music has never been popular among the working class. Timeline – This form of music passed through several stages. It has its roots ingrained in medieval times, even dating back to ancient Greeks. The form has evolved a lot in the present age. It still has major time divisions like the Medieval (476 – 1400) and Renaissance (1400 – 1600). Then there is the common practice period that includes Baroque (1600 – 1750), Classical (1730 – 1820) and Romantic Periods (1895 – 1910). The modern contemporary period includes 20th Century Classical (1900 – 2000) and contemporary classical (1975 to current).

The form of music which is preserved as classical is primarily a written musical tradition. These written works are then given expression in the form of recordings, oral transformations and musical notes. Music plays an effective role in transmitting classical notations. The written instructions, however, do not have explicit instructions. But, music does help to build the mood of a classical masterpiece. It helps in better understanding of the masterpieces.

A great influence of the classical form of music lies in its cultural durability. It is interesting to note its evolution from past to the present form. The form has taken materials from popular music and folk music. Yet it retained its originality and showed up as updated versions of the classical masterpieces.

The commercialism of classical music has popularised it among the people. Now, DVDs of the latest versions of classical music are available in retail stores. The prices of the DVDs are kept low and so all income group people can buy the DVDs from the Classical Music Stores. People now need not go to a theatre to watch a performance. In-fact, theatre comes to home in the form of the DVDs.The classical music CDs have made it very simple for people to get acquainted to classical forms of music. What is Classical Music?

The classical music period was 1750 to 1820. The term ‘classical music’ originated from the Latin term ‘classicus’, meaning taxpayer of the highest class. After the term made its way through the French, German and English languages, one of the earliest definitions of the word meant ‘classical, formal’. The term ‘classical music’ did not appear until the early 19th century, its earliest reference recorded by the Oxford English Dictionary is from about 1836.

There are many styles of music that exist within the classical music; these are symphony, opera, choral works and chamber music.

Among its musical characteristics are the use of dynamics and orchestral colour in a thematic way; the use of rhythm, including periodic structure and harmonic rhythm, to give definition to large-scale forms, along with the use of modulation to build longer spans of tension and release.

Classical music is often distinguished by its wide use of instruments of varying tones and pitches used to create a deep, rich sound. Classical music was hugely affected by the invention and modification of instruments throughout time. There are no set instruments that had to be used for classical music, composers wrote for orchestras, wind ensembles or various combinations of instruments for chamber music. Instruments like the piano, violins, flutes and trumpets were used. The human voice was also used, which invented its own series of classical music, the Opera.
