Madonna – Topping Herself In Sales And Style

Even with a tabloid history that can’t be topped by many, Madonna was able to top herself with the number one ticket sales for 2008 for her “Sticky and Sweet” tour. The pop icon reigned in $105.3 million over the course of her two month North American tour, which began in October in East Rutherford, New Jersey and finished in November in Mexico City. Even amid all the personal controversy that the mother and rocker faced this year, “Sticky and Sweet” finished up its final performances in Brazil last week to total $281.6 million internationally, according to the music trade publication Pollstar. The tour, which visited 17 countries, was promoting Madonna’s 11th studio album Hard Candy, which emerged on the pop charts in April with her number one international hit “4 Minutes.”

“Sticky and Sweet” incorporated Madonna’s love for everything vaudeville-esque, with a Ukrainian gypsy band, a vintage racing car and a virtual duet with Justin Timberlake (though Timberlake appeared in 3-D version for her Los Angeles show ? and to incorporate Madonna’s love for drama, she also had a conservative ex, Britney Spears, pop on stage as well). The show, directed by Jamie King, topped her last big tour, which came in 2006 with Confessions, earning her a total grossing of $193.7 million. Always trying to top herself, Madonna tickets have outlasted every other pop star and will continue to be hot items.

Following close behind was Celine Dion, who drew in nearly just as much in North American ticket sales this year and who had geared toward retirement earlier this year but instead launched her first world tour in eight years. Her total missed the top spot by a mere fifty million, reaching $236.6 million from 24 countries with North America earning about $94.

“Sticky and Sweet” initially had its fair share of skeptics, as the 50 year old “Material Girl” strutted her stuff scantily clad in tight leather and underwear garments. But after her athletic dance routines and veteran conceptions impressed even the most skeptical of critics, the Grammy award winner easily viewed the economic crisis as an uphill battle of her own. According to Pollstar, the least amount of concert goers went to big events this year, though those who did opened up their pocket books like never before. “We’ve had a better year than we really should have expected given the economic environment,” Gary Bongiovanni, editor of Pollstar’s Fresno, California publication, told Reuters. The average ticket price rose nearly eight percent while the number of tickets sold fell three.

This year marks the first that Pollstar incorporated international numbers into their data. Madonna’s concert numbers, which currently ranks her at eighth overall for North American tours, wasn’t the only monetary data collected. As one of the highest ranking performers of all time, Madonna’s donations to her Kabbalah religion were also of high discussion at the end of 2008, with high profile news sources discussing her over $3 million donation, which particularly went to her own Kabbalah Center in Los Angeles.

Even with a Hollywood psychic predicting a publicity romance stunt between Madonna and Alex Rodriquez, the Yankees player she’s most recently been “attached,” and media relations that follow her every move, Madonna’s 2009 will unforgivably be brighter than the last.

Taylor Swift – Winning Awards and Performing at the CMAs

Taylor Swift has been on a rollercoaster ride that continues to take her higher and higher. The country starlet has been gaining mainstream attention since her run-in with rapper Kanye West on MTV’s Video Music Awards night, and though she doesn’t talk about the incident anymore she still revels in its attention. So it comes as little surprise that the latest single to come out of her repertoire is “Fifteen,” the self-penned tune that brings her back to her freshman year in high school.

The tune made its debut Oct. 9 on CMT just after the Pennsylvania native introduced her special “Fifteen Swiftly Made Videos.” It’s just the start of her parade that has kept her singles chart toppers, as the 90-minute special showcases her entire video collection like fan favorites “Teardrops on My Guitar,” “Love Story,” and the VMA winner “You Belong with Me.” If you want to see these videos reenacted live onstage, get Taylor Swift tickets from http://www.stubhub.com/taylor-swift-tickets.

The single is a real tale of her high school life (or the part she got to experience), as Swift delves into her friend Abigail’s heartbreak, meeting new people and first dates. “I like to write personal songs,” she said. “I like to write songs that are very obviously about people. I like to write songs about love, and I like to write songs about relationships, and I like to write songs about boys.” The simplicity of the tracks has done well for the singer, who recently picked up three awards in major categories at the early October Nashville Music Awards ceremony in the Cannery Ballroom.

Named Artist of the Year, Songwriter-Artist of the Year and Country Album of the Year for Fearless, it seems that little can stop this 19-year-old from taking over the modern country music world. “See, when I write songs, I write them because I need to figure something out. I need for what I’m feeling to make more sense to me,” she said on her MySpace page, “so I make it into a song.” Let’s hope that there are a lot more mysteries out there for Ms. Swift, who has created two albums chockfull of successful singles in her short career.

Following her win at Nashville, it should come as no surprise that she will be hoping to follow up her act performing at the 43rd annual Country Music Association Awards with a win, as well. Scheduled to perform during the November ceremony along with Kenny Chesney, Reba McEntire, Sugarland, Darius Rucker, Keith Urban and Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift is nominated for Female Vocalist of the Year, Album of the Year for her sophomore Fearless, Music Video of the Year for “Love Story” and the coveted Entertainer of the Year. Last’s year’s win by Carrie Underwood for Entertainer of the Year was an upset as it was the first time in over a decade that a female country artist picked up the highest prize of the night – can our favorite country teen do it this year? Find out if she has it in her when the CMA Awards roll around next month.

Britney Spears – Third Time’s a Charm

Britney Spears has released a new single, and with her empire finally fixed at the top, it will be no surprise to see “3″ at the top of the charts this week. The new single featured on her greatest hits collection The Singles Collection premiered on September 29th to New York radio stations. The single was produced by her collaborator Max Martin, who helped Spears see success with her first hit a decade ago “…Baby One More Time” as well as the more recent “If you Seek Amy.” The single, much like everything else Spears has been doing since her good girl gone bad school girl outfit in “…Baby One More Time,” will likely cause a media uprising as its content discusses matters of the heart in an unconventional manner.

The single is currently posted on New York radio’s Z 100′s website and features her signature sound and a dance beat as she sings “1, 2, 3/ not only you and me/ got 180 degrees/ and I’m caught in between.” The song is the only new hit to appear on the album that celebrates her 10 years in the business. It is her third greatest hits compilation in four years, following 2005′s My Prerogative and 2006′s B in the Mix: The Remixes.

The newest compilation will appear in two forms: the first will feature 17 of her biggest hits, including …Baby One More Time, the album that spent 103 weeks on the Billboard 200 chart and has sold 10,554,000 copies (according Nielson SoundScan); the second will be an ‘ultimate fan box set’ with all 29 of her singles, a DVD of her music videos and a booklet featuring classic images, reports Billboard.

Spears has been out of the tabloids recently, instead making the cover of Rolling Stone and other music magazines for her Circus tour. Though the tour closed at the end of September, Spears has remained in the headlines for her custody case with former husband and backup dancer Kevin Federline. The couple has two children, Sean Preston and Jayden James, and recently learned that they will be splitting custody through the end of the year, according to TMZ.

The instruction is an extension of the already preexisting arrangement that had been ordered while Spears was on tour that enabled the boys to travel with their mom. The plan now allows Spears to travel with her sons outside of California, however she must provide Federline with room and board, as well as an extra $5,000 a month (making the grand total in child support $25,000).

Britney Spears was born in a small town in Louisiana, and she took to the stage at a young age, performing for her family before appearing on the nationally televised Star Search and The New Mickey Mouse Club. After her second season as a Mouseketeer the show was cancelled, so the young star moved to New York and began recording demo tapes, some that eventually landed in the hands of Jive executives who signed the 15-year-old to a recording deal that had her working with producers and writers of established fame (Eric Foster White and Max Martin). Once she was paired up with Jive and Martin, the success came easily, skyrocketing the small town girl into pop star fame that has yet to quell over a decade later.

Lil Wayne – Rapper Turns Rocker

What’s next for a 26-year-old rapper who has already fully conquered the hip-hop music scene, pumping out multiple number one singles and albums while dominating just about every awards show in the process? A career as a rock star, of course. Lil Wayne, a New Orleans-hailed rapper who has worked his way up the charts in 2008 with smash singles like “A Milli” and “Lollipop,” is shelving his signature hip-hop beats and Southern rap antics for guitar riffs and rock ‘n’ roll, sparking rumors of an upcoming rock album to succeed his million-selling 2008 release Tha Carter III.

Now considered a bona fide rap star, Lil Wayne is (temporarily?) taking a break from the hip-hop industry, working with artists such as Canadian rapper Drake to produce a full-on rock album. A release date for the album is yet undetermined, but Lil Wayne made a comment at November’s BET Awards saying, “People see the guitars and they wanna call it rock and roll. I plug up the bass, I plug up the electric, I plug up the acoustic ? it’s not really rock and roll, it’s just great music I’m doing right now.”

With a current nationwide “I Am Music” tour underway, Lil Wayne is one busy artist, and writing/recording sessions for his upcoming album will undoubtedly keep his name at the forefront of the music scene for the next year as 2009 unfolds. While the hot Southern rapper expands his musical wings this year for a taste of different genres, it’s easy to see how this Louisiana native got his start in the hip-hop industry. Hobnobbing with Cash Money Records while growing up in New Orleans’ 17th Ward, Lil Wayne (whose real name is Dwayne Michael Carter, Jr.) got his start in the music industry as a teenager, joining the Cash Money hip-hop group Hot Boys and making his rapping debut in the group’s 1997 album Get It How U Live! 1999′s Guerrilla Warfare was Wayne’s second effort with Hot Boys, and the talented teen embarked upon a solo career thereafter, releasing his debut solo effort Tha Block is Hot in 1999. The album was an instant number one on the R&B/hip-hop charts, marking Lil Wayne’s official arrival on the music scene.

Lil Wayne spent the rest of the early 2000s recording and releasing a string of successful albums, but it was 2004′s Tha Carter that gave the talented artist his next big hit. The album spawned the Top Five hit single “Go DJ,” also setting him up with collaborations with other R&B artists. 2005′s Tha Carter II further nailed the name Lil Wayne into the floorboards of the rap industry, sparking huge hits with singles “Fireman,” “Best Rapper Alive,” Hustler Musik” and “Receipt.” After the smash single “Stuntin’ Like My Daddy” emerged on the music scene, Lil Wayne went back in the studio and came out with the insanely strong album Tha Carter III, another instant number one all over the charts that has sparked the smash singles “Got Money,” “A Milli” and “Lollipop.” Lil Wayne has since taken to the road, embarking upon a string of tour dates for his “I Am Music” tour. If you haven’t seen the nation’s freshest rap act in concert, get Lil Wayne tickets from http://www.stubhub.com/lil-wayne-tickets and start rapping the explicit words to “Lollipop” right along with the New Orleans gent!

Miley Cyrus – Inaugural Fun For All Ages

With the nation’s biggest event of the year already stirring up excitement, the Presidential Inauguration has been drawing in the biggest names in entertainment to help celebrate the beginning of a new presidential era. It’s hard to imagine any national event going down without the help of vocalist Miley Cyrus, and the tween sensation will indeed be right in the middle of the action this month in Washington, D.C., as Cyrus and her father (the “Achy, Breaky Heart”-singing Billy Ray Cyrus) will both perform in the TV concert Kids’ Inaugural: We Are the Future, an event honoring military families that is set to air on the Disney Channel on January 19 (Martin Luther King, Jr. Day).

Also joining the Hannah Montana superstar and her father onstage in support of the Presidential Inauguration are the Jonas Brothers, Demi Lovato, Keke Palmer, Usher and Shaquille O’Neal. The Kids’ Inaugural: We Are the Future concert will air one day before the 2009 Presidential Inauguration. Another concert in celebration of the inauguration will take place on January 20, the night of President Obama’s swearing-in ceremony. The Neighborhood Ball: An Inauguration Celebration will feature musical guests Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Faith Hill, Stevie Wonder, Jay-Z, Alicia Keys and Shakira and will air on ABC on January 20.

Pop singer and Disney Channel icon Miley Cyrus is no stranger to the main stage, as the teenage celebrity was born to country music star Billy Ray Cyrus. Miley, whose real name is Destiny Hope but takes her stage name from the nickname Smiley for which she was called as a cheerful child, was born in 1992 and wasted no time getting into the entertainment industry.

The child prodigy made her debut as an actress in 2003 when she made a cameo in the television show Doc, and later that year she appeared in the Tim Burton film Big Fish. Cyrus worked singing into her healthy diet of acting and by 2005 she was ready to explode on the public scene, giving the rest of the world a taste of Miley Cyrus when she was cast in the lead role of the Disney program Hannah Montana. The lovable teenager plays a normal schoolgirl by day and rock star by night in Hannah Montana, letting her emphasize both her acting and singing skills simultaneously. The Disney Channel television series became an instant hit with teens across the country in 2006, eventually leading to a Hannah Montana film and soundtrack that propelled Miley Cyrus’ singing career.

In 2007 Cyrus toured the country with another fresh Disney act the Cheetah Girls, and Cyrus’ music industry breakout occurred the same year when the Hannah Montana album was released. Hannah Montana 2/Meet Miley Cyrus followed in its footsteps, becoming Cyrus’ first number one-charting album while further establishing her as a vocalist just as much as an actress. In 2008 Cyrus released Breakout, an appropriately-titled album that was her first full-blown album as herself rather than as Hannah Montana. The album was an instant number one on the Billboard 200 and smash singles “See You Again” and “7 Things” exploded on the pop scene soon thereafter.

As if Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana hasn’t been busy enough these days, the young superstar has also thrown herself into a hectic schedule of tour dates and live performances, appearing on stages across the country while continuing to film episodes of her famed Disney Channel television series. The energetic vocalist’s live performances are fun for all ages, so grab your entire family and get Miley Cyrus tickets from http://www.stubhub.com/miley-cyrus-tickets/!

50 Cent – His House…Still Not Small Change

No matter how dire the global economic situation may seem, fans can still collect enough coins to see rap master 50 Cent live in concert. It goes without a doubt that any 50 Cent extravaganza is likely to be lavish. However, 50 himself is not completely immune to the downturn in the economy and the housing market. His mansion has been up for sale for two years?and still no bites. Originally priced at $18.5 million, it has sunk down $4 million to $14.5 million (a 20 percent decrease in value). Of course this is still not pocket change, mind you. But then again the ritzy 17-acre property comes complete with a helipad, a 40-person hot tub, a movie theater and billiard rooms. The massive pad boasts 18 bedrooms and a whopping 37 bathrooms. What you might want with 37 bathrooms is anyone’s guess, but it’s almost a guarantee that high quality goes along with high quantity in this particular case. In addition, 50′s MTV reality TV series “Money and the Power” is reportedly being cancelled.

50 Cent has spoken out about the current financial hardships gripping not only the United States but the world. Coming from a guy who currently owns 37 bathrooms, this may seem odd, but nevertheless the entertainment industry stands to suffer a bit as people shift their focus from spending money on movies and concerts as well as CDs and DVDs to saving and being more frugal in their shopping habits.

50 Cent, born Curtis James Jackson III, rose to fame in the rap industry with his platinum-selling albums Get Rich or Die Tryin’ and The Massacre. His success has reached beyond the boundaries of the United States, and he is currently considered one of the rap world’s most successful artists.

Of course it wasn’t always fame and fortune for 50, though perhaps he might like you to think it was. He was born in Queens, New York and as a teenager got caught up with dealing drugs during the 1980s. Inspired by rap music, he sought to gain his own footing in the industry, but even that led to trouble for 50. He was shot nine times in 2000 and somehow miraculously survived. Thanks to help from rapper Eminem and producer Dr. Dre, he started his career and would eventually rise to become one of world’s highest selling rappers.

50 Cent is just as well known for his publicized “feuds” with other rappers as he is for his music (perhaps more so). Some nasty words were exchanged with Ja Rule, The Game and Fat Joe. In 2007, 50 Cent and Kanye West butted heads to see whose album would sell the most in a day upon its release on September 11. West’s Graduation won, although Curtis was not far behind.

Any fan of rap music would likely love a pair of tickets to see 50 live onstage. You can find a pair now at http://StubHub.com. Any fan might also like a 17-acre spot of land with 37 bathrooms…but that’s up to you.

Willie Nelson – The Wild Ways of Willie!

That Willie always has something new to say: a reason why you should grab yourself a pair of Willie Nelson tickets and get on down to see the Country music outlaw sing you a tune. Though he is in some ways considered a country music outlaw, his message always rings through his original music. So who’s going to listen to a country music rebel? For starters: millions of fans worldwide.

The sensational songwriter found his niche it what has become known as “Outlaw country.” It’s not as unruly as it sounds. It essentially refers to country music that does not conform to Nashville standards, Nashville being the birth of place and home of country music. Nelson’s outlaw image was confirmed with the release of his album: Wanted: The Outlaws, which hit the stores in 1976. His songs began to top the charts and the man who defied Nashville became a household name among the wannabe rough riders of backcountry. He also teamed up with some other like-minded musicians in the 1980′s, in a band known as the Highwaymen. Together with Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson and Waylon Jennings, Nelson crooned away to the tune of raw and rebellious country music. Even today, a pair of Willie Nelson tickets is considered a hot commodity.

Nelson has also dabbled in acting. He appeared in Half Baked, yes I’m sure you all can guess what the film is about, as a pot-smoking historian. Suddenly history class seems a lot more interesting with a stoned, bandana-wearing Willie standing at the chalkboard. He also appeared in Beerfest, as himself, looking for teammates to accompany him in a made-up world championship marijuana-smoking contest held in Amsterdam. He’s also made appearances in Miami Vice, The Simpsons, King of the Hill and The Colbert Report.

Nelson is a man who consistently campaigns for all causes green and I don’t only mean marijuana, but also for biofuel, a component that should help ease the strains on global warming. He has also raised money for several charities and has donated money to important causes, such as the Tsunami relief Austin to Asia. For many fans it is just another shining example of how Willie Nelson’s heart is as big as his deep, crooning voice. He has always made a huge commitment to social causes and continues to inspire millions of fans from around the world.

The man is an American icon, his distinctive voice and folksy tunes are well known and well played in many iPods and CD players across the country. He is a husband, father, singer and activist who never seems to slow down despite all the things that are handed to him. His everlasting image will always be that of an aged, pot smoking, country singing hippie dude who almost always wears his hair in braids and a bandana on top of his head. He is a living legend in more ways than one. See him perform live, get your Willie Nelson tickets today and cheer on this rebel cowboy.

Def Leppard – Hair, Spandex and Hard Rock Hit the Road!

The sound of ’80s hard rock-defined largely by masses of straggly hair and straight men unabashedly wearing spandex-was in large part crafted by Def Leppard. And though the band played an essential role in the American rock scene, they were actually all from Sheffield, England. They were also a tenacious group of musicians, unwilling to buckle after a tragic accident threatened to dissolve the band and cause them to lose their drummer.

The band formed in 1977, with a great deal of their influence coming from the glam-rock excess of Mott the Hoople and T. Rex. The flamboyance of those glam bands rubbed off on Def Leppard, who started playing local shows and impressing audiences with their own colorful clothing and on stage antics. They were still teenagers when they released their first EP, and in 1980, their debut LP, On Through the Night, turned them into U.K. superstars. The tour that followed helped them cultivate an American fan base.

In 1981, they followed up with their sophomore album, High ‘N’ Dry. The record went platinum in the U.S., and MTV helped promote them with the video of “Bringin’ on the Heartbreak” playing regularly. But in 1983, Pyromania, their third record, set the charts on fire. The band’s singles found plenty of air time on the radio-but a dark turn for the band was lurking right around the corner.

On New Year’s Day, the band’s drummer, Rick Allen, was injured in a bad car crash. The accident claimed his arm, leaving his future as a musician in doubt. To the surprise of rock fans (and no doubt musicians) everywhere, it didn’t deter Allen, who began practicing on an electronic drum set before heading right back to work with his mates. The band would become well-known for their drummer’s never-say-die attitude.

The band eventually went back to the studio, recording the album that would become known as Hysteria. Released in 1987, it didn’t do as well as previous albums at first. It could have been partly because the band steady began sliding in a more commercial, pop direction, sacrificing their metal roots, but it was probably also because the music scene was changing. Still, once some of the singles trickled out-most notably “Pour Some Sugar On Me”-the record started to sell large numbers of copies. Even with the advent of bands that would become even more defining to late ’80s rock, like Guns ‘N’ Roses, Def Leppard was still the band that rule the roost as far as hair metal was concerned.

The band seemed to be riding high, but the hard rockin’ image they portrayed wasn’t just for show, and that kind of living eventually caught up with them. After guitarist Steve Clark died from a drug overdose, things went downhill. Their following albums were received poorly by critics, and declining album sales followed.

But now that they’re back on the road, you can bet that fans all over will be buying up Def Leppard tickets at http://www.stubhub.com/def-leppard-tickets and seeing the band live.

Bruce Springsteen – Working on a Comeback

It’s a shock that Bruce Springsteen and Taylor Swift are in the same sentence, but it here goes - Springsteen threw off the country princess from her top chart spot this week with over 223,000 copies of his (and his E Street Band) latest album, Working on a Dream, bumping the Love Story queen from her eight week reign. Though the Boss only threw her off by one spot, Working on a Dream is bound to continue making the move through the Billboard charts as it’s not his first time at the top ? nor his second, but rather his ninth (hence, the nickname, perhaps?). It shouldn’t surprise many that the man behind smooth, folksy vocals is seeing a jump in the sales charts as his performance on the highest rated television show (the Super Bowl’s nearly 96 million viewers) and vocal support during President Barack Obama’s campaign helped to spark more attention in his direction. As the crowd followeed him and listened to his acceptance speech at the Golden Globes and were instantly enthralled with the rock veteran.

Springsteen isn’t taking things slowly this year, as his February 1st; 12 minute Super Bowl appearance followed his appearance at the inaugural concert for President Barack Obama and his win at the Golden Globes for his The Wrestler track. Almost 60 years old and it seems like the rock star, who is still competing with men his own age like Eric Clapton, The Stones and Paul McCartney, isn’t gearing up to retire any time soon. As Working on a Dream remains at the top of The Billboard 200, Springsteen and his E Street Band are filing in among other crooners at top indie festivals - Bonnaroo Arts & Music Festival is apparently Springsteen’s chance to get those college aged, free-spirits in tents a chance toward a new lifeline. “With Springsteen, it’s like his musical influence almost skipped a generation,” Joe Levy, the editor of Blender Magazine said to NY Daily News. Levy’s opinion is that while the ’90s weren’t a successful decade for Springsteen, the Boss’s notes have finally caught second wind with hipsters as younger bands look to him for influence, such as Gaslight Anthem and The Killers. “It’s an odd fit, but there is some fit there,” Levy continued. What’s even remarkable is that even with all the spotlight Springsteen is getting this year, the Bonnaroo performance will be his only festival in North America. Though it won’t be his only headlining performance, tickets are going like wildfire as Super Bowl hype, a few political headshots and some indie headlines are relighting that fire.

Working on a Dream includes his Golden Globe track along with twelve other tracks that were written, according to Springsteen, during the production of Magic, his 2007 album. “Towards the end of recording Magic, excited by the return to pop production sounds, I continued writing. When my friend producer Brendan O’Brien heard the new songs, he said, ‘Let’s keep going.’ Over the course of the next year, that’s just what we did, recording with the E Street Band during the breaks on last year’s tour. I hope Working on a Dream has caught the energy of the band fresh off the road from some of the most exciting shows we’ve ever done. All the songs were written quickly, we usually used one of our first few takes, and we all had a blast making this one from beginning to end,” Springsteen said on his website. Recorded in Atlanta, Los Angeles, New York City and New Jersey, Working on a Dream is Springsteen’s twenty-fourth album.
