The Best of Country Music

Nashville’s biggest heartthrob Tim McGraw has surprised fans in the past with atypical collaborations (think Nelly and “Over and Over,”) and this Southern-fried country musician is at it again, this time with “I’m N Luv (Wit a Stripper)” rapper T-Pain. McGraw and T-Pain both met recently when making appearances on an episode of Saturday Night Live, and talk over going into the studio together emerged then and there.

While nothing has officially been nailed down yet, both McGraw and T-Pain have been talking up a storm, T-Pain even letting E! Online in on the nature of the collaboration, saying, “The hip-hop has been done with Tim and Nelly, so we gotta be more country than hip-hop.” With a partnership in the wings, T-Pain continues onward with tour dates alongside Lil Wayne, Keyshia Cole, Gym Class Heroes and Keri Hilson, while McGraw delves further into an innovative style, even reportedly contributing to an upcoming single “Human,” set to appear on hip-hop prince Chris Brown’s upcoming album. Taylor Swift has been on a rollercoaster ride that continues to take her higher and higher. The country starlet has been gaining mainstream attention since her run-in with rapper Kanye West on MTV’s Video Music Awards night, and though she doesn’t talk about the incident anymore she still revels in its attention. So it comes as little surprise that the latest single to come out of her repertoire is “Fifteen,” the self-penned tune that brings her back to her freshman year in high school.

The single is a real tale of her high school life (or the part she got to experience), as Swift delves into her friend Abigail’s heartbreak, meeting new people and first dates. “I like to write personal songs,” she said. “I like to write songs that are very obviously about people. I like to write songs about love, and I like to write songs about relationships, and I like to write songs about boys.” The simplicity of the tracks has done well for the singer, who recently picked up three awards in major categories at the early October Nashville Music Awards ceremony in the Cannery Ballroom.

Named Artist of the Year, Songwriter-Artist of the Year and Country Album of the Year for Fearless, it seems that little can stop this 19-year-old from taking over the modern country music world. “See, when I write songs, I write them because I need to figure something out. I need for what I’m feeling to make more sense to me,” she said on her MySpace page, “so I make it into a song.” Let’s hope that there are a lot more mysteries out there for Ms. Swift, who has created two albums chockfull of successful singles in her short career.

Following her win at Nashville, it should come as no surprise that she will be hoping to follow up her act performing at the 43rd annual Country Music Association Awards with a win, as well. Scheduled to perform during the November ceremony along with Kenny Chesney, Reba McEntire, Sugarland, Darius Rucker, Keith Urban and Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift is nominated for Female Vocalist of the Year, Album of the Year for her sophomore Fearless, Music Video of the Year for “Love Story” and the coveted Entertainer of the Year. All his rowdy friends may have settled down, but Hank Williams, Jr. is still kicking up dust in Nashville’s country music scene. This weekend Williams was in attendance at the Broadcast Music Inc.’s 56th Annual BMI Awards, where he won the high distinction of BMI Icon. Joining the ranks of his rebel-rousing pals Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard, Hank Jr. won the crown of BMI Icon, highlighting his astonishing career as an Emmy and Grammy Award-winning, six-time platinum winning, 20-time gold winning redneck wonder. While ol’ Bocephus (as Hank’s father nicknamed him) was sitting pretty at this year’s BMI Awards, he was in good company with the fresh new face of country music herself: southern princess Taylor Swift. Swift showed the stark contrast in country music from when Hank Jr. started rising in the country music industry, but the sultry seductress took home the coveted BMI Country Songwriter of the Year crown, propelled by her hit single “Teardrops on My Guitar,” which earned the Robert J. Hank Jr. went to work in the late ’60s and ’70s garnering a fan base full of rowdy Southern rockers and country outlaws, taking his rebellious nature and independence from his father to the extreme with 1979′s “Family Tradition,” a Top Five Country Single that states, “Country music singers have always been a real close family/But lately some of my kin folks have disowned a few others and me/I guess it’s because I kinda changed my direction/I guess I went and broke the family tradition.”

Since the 1970s, Bocephus has palled around with other legendary traditional country music acts like Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, David Allan Coe and Charlie Daniels, making his name one of the most popular and most controversial in Nashville. With the lineup for California’s biggest country music festival just announced, it looks like its third annual event will be its biggest ever. With headliners that include Brad Paisley, Kenny Chesney, Reba McEntire and Kid Rock making the list of initial performers, Stagecoach Country Music Festival tickets are already going to be hard to come by with more than four months to go!

The lineup for 2009 was listed on Stagecoach’s website, which also includes Miranda Lambert, Earl Scruggs, Ricky Skaggs, Jerry Jeff Walker, Reverend Horton Heat, Little Big Town, Poco, The Charlie Daniels Band, Darius Rucker (from Hootie and the Blowfish), Lynn Anderson, Dale Watson, Chris Cagle, Lady Antebellum, Ralph Stanley, Doyle Lawson, The Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band, Danielle Peck, The Zac Brown Band, The Duhks, Waddie Mitchell, Randy Houser, Hot Club of Cowtown and James Intveld.

The event is a rodeo of California’s country fans of sorts, complete with a mechanical bull, activities for the kids via the Half-Pint Hootenanny kids area and an expansion for all those RV’s that roll in. The festival, put together by Coachella company Goldenvoice, was expanded last year to three days when the Eagle’s made a last minute performance for a bonus day. The Eagles headlined a day all to themselves after their Grammy win for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group for “How Long” just weeks prior to the event. This year is set to remain at two, but with all the country cancellations that have been occurring as of late, who knows what will happen to the all star lineup as the months pass. Last year the attendance doubled what it was from the year previous (aka its debut year) from 55,000 to 120,000, with headliners that included Rascal Flatts, Tim McGraw, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, Trace Adkins, Dierks Bentley, Big & Rich, Dwight Yoakam, George Jones and a reunion of The Judds.

AEG also puts on the event with Goldenvoice, another player in the original Coachella mixture. The music man behind all of AEG’s success, Chuck Morris, recently talked to media outlets about plans for a new festival for 2010. The company, which throws down Coachella followed by Stagecoach just a week apart, could add another “drawing board,” according to the Denver Post, stamp for AEG either the week before or after the Mile High Music Festival with yet another genre bending festival.

Watch out, Joe Jonas: you’ve just given Taylor Swift one more subject for her man-eating songwriting talents. Swift, a budding country music starlet known for writing songs about breakups with her ex-boyfriends (remember her song that claims “As far as I’m concerned you’re just another picture to burn”?), has recently split with former beau Joe Jonas (of the Jonas Brothers), and she’s not afraid to broadcast her feelings on their relationship to the nation.

Swift’s new album Fearless is set to be released November 11, and a last-minute recording session for the already raved-about album has resulted in the addition of the much-anticipated Jonas-inspired song “Forever and Always,” a track Swift claims is about a fading relationship. No other word but ‘fearless’ describes Swift’s bold and quick turnaround time with the single, and the ringleted country star hasn’t stopped there. In a recent interview with Ryan Seacrest on his KIIS-FM radio show, Swift admitted her breakup with Jonas, claiming he broke up with her in a 27-second phone call. She also added some of her cutesy teenage humor concerning the split in one of her MySpace blogs, where she holds up a Joe Jonas doll and exclaims, “See, this one even comes with a phone. So he can break up with other dolls.” Swift then holds up a Taylor Swift doll and tells it, “Stay away from him, okay?” This might be a telling sign of how the breakup went, but more will be revealed this month when Fearless hits stores nationwide.
