Many say that the 1980s is the best decade-especially when it comes to music. This claim, of course, is arguable, but there is no denying that a number of music that we still know today came from the 80s. The 80s is a period of musical innovations, with the changes done at this time serving as the catalyst for a number of influences in the following years. Here’s a look at some of the most influential artists during the 80s, including the songs and the lyrics that they made popular. These songs are acknowledged by musical authorities as among the best songs during that decade.

“Like A Virgin,” by Madonna

No list about the music from the 80s is complete without Madonna, the undisputed queen of reinvention. Her song “Like A Virgin” is perhaps her most controversial during the 80s (with lyrics like “Like a virgin / Touched for the very first time / Like a virgin / When your heart beats / Next to mine”). Yet, while the lyrics are controversial, its achievement as one of the decade’s most achieved songs is not overshadowed. Its lyrics, after all, only serve as the catalyst for other songs with similar topics.

“Billie Jean” and “Beat It,” by Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson was called the “King of Pop”-and for good reasons. If you look at the 80s, two of his songs can prove that he certainly deserve this title. “Billie Jean” is perhaps the most acclaimed song of Jackson, proving that the lyrics and music he creates can both be critically and commercially successful. The song alludes to the instance when a woman acclaimed is the father of her child, hence the lyrics “Billie Jean is not my lover / She’s just a girl who claims that I am the one / But the kid is not my son.” Needless to say, the lyrics of this song continue to be iconic until today. “Beat it,” on the other hand, has the same feel of the lyrics of “Billie Jean.” Here, the lyrics contain warnings to avoid violence at any costs. Both songs continue to be covered today, most notably by band Fall Out Boy (for “Beat It”) and American Idol winner David Cook (for “Billie Jean”)

“Livin’ on a Prayer,” by Bon Jovi

Considered by many as the best song of the 80s, this Bon Jovi piece was first deemed by Jon Bon Jovi as unworthy to be released. Its reworked version was included in their Slippery When Wet album; it has achieved massive success ever since. The lyrics tell the story of a working class couple who struggle in order to survive and maintain their relationship. The lyrics have several interpretation-some say the lyrics is anti-labor union, others say it has no political leanings. But the regardless of the lyrics, the song remains to be relevant-and beautiful, just like a prayer.

“Just Like Heaven,” by The Cure

One of the British bands that achieved success during the 80s is The Cure. In an interview, The Cure’s Robert Smith said he wrote the lyrics for “Just Like Heaven” with the British audience in mind; he said he wanted to write lyrics that the British can relate to. And its success can also prove that its appeal exceeds its intended market.

Lyrics are often considered as poetry for the masses; in turn, those who write lyrics are considered as poets. This idea may not be true all the time, but it is applicably to a few notably artists. Norah Jones, Tupac, Jewel, and Paul McCartney are noted writers of lyrics (and creators of music too, of course), and their lyrics have been published as books which are often classified as poetry collections. Not all lyrics are poems, of course, but their exemplary work often pass the standard of literature. At its best, lyrics can transcend music and function as great literature. You probably have experienced being annoyed by a person who puts wrong lyrics when singing your favorite song? Worse, such person may even keep on singing the song and adds even more blunders by putting on more wrong lyrics. Some people simply could not help putting an ad lib or interpreting songs using their own lyrics, with grammatical and sense errors.

Have you ever noticed that some songs are naturally coming with lyrics that are grammatically incorrect and are not making sense? Yet, many composers and lyricists keep on producing and releasing such songs because it is just impossible or very difficult not to give in to the need to come up with lyrics that just fits into music measurements. In fact, many of the most popular songs of all times, sung by the most influential singers and recording artists, are striking with erroneous and inappropriate lyrics.

The problem about lyrics of many songs is escalated by people who unconsciously sing songs with incorrect lyrics. There are four basic reasons why some people keep on doing such mistakes. If you are a fascist textualist (or a person who care most about song lyrics), it would help you understand and tolerate such people if you would know and understand why lyrics are mistaken.

First, some songs simply have misheard lyrics. If you would look at the official and actual transcriptions of the song lyrics, you would find that words and sentences are grammatically correct and are making logical sense. However, phonetics has it that some words simply could always be misheard.

Second, some people just do not understand the song lyrics, or worse, they do not comprehend what a song is all about. Singers who are not naturally speaking the language of a particular song may not totally understand the message and content of it.

Third, some people have a superiority complex to think their own lyrics are better than the actual lyrics of a song. To these people, music is not all that matters, but also words. Some of them correct lyrics with grammatical errors, while some just do not feel like saying or singing specific words. In some cases, there are words that are hard to pronounce in music lyrics. Thus, some singers tend to use synonyms or homonyms to avoid difficulty and blunders in pronunciations.

Lastly, some people enjoy putting ad lib to replace actual song lyrics. They might be singing to make people laugh, or they might be doing so because they aim to irk specific people. Thus, if a friend of yours keeps on singing a song with erratic lyrics despite seeing that you are totally annoyed, he might be doing it intentionally.

What should you do with such people? Basically, you have no choice but to endure and tolerate. If you could raise to the person’s attention the mispronounced or mistaken song lyrics, do so. But if you could not out of politeness, you could just give him a book of song lyrics as a gift.
